L3 Applied Design
Studying 3D applied design, students use a wide variety of techniques and processes that develop their making and designing skills. Materials used within the department are glass, metal, wood, resin, jesmonite, upcycled materials and plaster.
Within the department students have access to specialist tools and equipment including plant machinery, pottery wheels, glass fusing kilns and laser cutter. As a part of students’ vocational studies students run external workshops to the general public in association with the Crafts council and Hey Clay annual national celebration of ceramics.
In 2020 the applied design groups worked with Nikkitapdesigns visiting furniture designers, building on their own professional practice, using recycled materials and reflecting on ego design.
After graduating students can apply for design pathways including interior design, jewelley, furniture, product, automotive design, ceramics, glass artist, crafts maker, prop maker, architecture, surface pattern design, and sustainable design.
Bedford College offers progression from level 3 to HNC and HND in 3D design.
